"5.7:
A
Day
to
Remember
for
Nature
and
Humanity"
On
May
7,
every
year,
the
world
celebrates
International
Day
of
Forests
-
a
day
dedicated
to
raising
awareness
about
the
importance
of
forests
and
trees
in
sustaining
life
on
earth.
But,
in
recent
years,
another
event
has
made
this
day
even
more
significant
-
the
Paris
Agreement
on
Climate
Change
came
into
force
on
May
7,
2016.
The
Paris
Agreement
is
a
landmark
international
treaty
that
aims
to
limit
global
warming
to
well
below
2
degrees
Celsius
above
pre-industrial
levels
and
to
pursue
efforts
to
limit
it
even
further
to
1.5
degrees
Celsius.
It
was
a
historic
moment
that
brought
together
196
countries
to
address
the
most
pressing
challenge
facing
humanity
-
climate
change.
Since
then,
the
world
has
made
significant
progress
towards
achieving
the
goals
of
the
Paris
Agreement.
Countries
have
submitted
their
Nationally
Determined
Contributions
(NDCs)
outlining
their
commitments
to
reducing
greenhouse
gas
emissions,
and
many
have
taken
concrete
actions
to
transition
to
renewable
energy,
improve
energy
efficiency,
and
conserve
natural
resources.
However,
there
is
still
a
long
way
to
go.
Climate
change
is
already
wreaking
havoc
on
our
planet,
with
rising
global
temperatures
causing
more
frequent
and
intense
extreme
weather
events,
melting
glaciers
and
sea
ice,
and
threatening
the
existence

many
species.
The
COVID-19
pandemic
has
further
highlighted
the
interconnectedness
of
our
world
and
the
urgent
need
to
work
together
to
build
a
more
resilient
and
sustainable
future.
On
this
5.7,
let
us
remember
the
importance
of
forests
and
trees
in
providing
clean
air,
water,
and
habitat
for
biodiversity.
Let
us
also
celebrate
the
progress
we
have
made
towards
tackling
climate
change
and
urge
our
leaders
to
do
more.
We
have
the
technology,
the
knowledge,
and
the
resources
to
create
a
better
world
for
ourselves
and
for
future
generations.
It
is
up
to
us
to
take
action
and
make
it
happen.
