Proxima
Centauri-
The
Closest
Star
to
Earth
Proxima
Centauri
is
a
small,
dim
red
dwarf
star
located
just
over
4
light-years
away
from
Earth,
in
the
Alpha
Centauri
star
system.
It
is
the
closest
star
to
our
solar
system
and
is
often
referred
to
as
the
"neighborhood
star."
Despite
being
small
and
dim,
Proxima
Centauri
is
actually
quite
an
active
star,
with
frequent
flares
and
coronal
mass
ejections.
These
events
have
been
detected
by
telescopes,
as
well
as
by
the
Hubble
Space
Telescope.

Centauri's
flares
are
particularly
impressive,
with
some
of
them
releasing
up
to
ten
times
more
energy
than
the
most
powerful
flares
ever
observed
on
our
sun.
One
of
the
most
exciting
things
about
Proxima
Centauri
is
the
possibility
that
it
could
host
planets.
In
2016,
astronomers
announced
the
discovery
of
a
planet
orbiting
the
star,
called
Proxima
b.
This
planet
is
slightly
larger
than
Earth
and
sits
in
the
star's
habitable
zone,
where
temperatures
are
just
right
for
liquid
water
to
exist
on
its
surface.
Proxima
b
has
been
dubbed
a
"super-Earth"
and
is
one
of
the
most
promising
candidates
for
finding
life
beyond
our
solar
system.
Despite
its
relative
closeness
to
Earth,
Proxima
Centauri
remains
shrouded
in
mystery.
Scientists
are
continuing
to
study
the
star
and
its
potential
planets,
hoping
to
unlock
some
of
the
secrets
of
our
nearest
neighbor.
Only
time
will
tell
what
revelations
this
small
but
mighty
star
will
reveal.
