Vipassana
meditation,
also
known
as
insight
meditation,
is
a
Buddhist
practice
that
originated
in
India
over
2,500
years
ago.
Its
aim
is
to
gain
insight
into
the
nature
of
reality
and
to
overcome
suffering
by
observing
the
sensations
of
the
body
and
mind.
This
technique
was
rediscovered
by
S.N.
Goenka,
an
Indian
businessman,
in
the
1960s.
He
popularized
it
by
establishing
over
200
centers
worldwide,
offering
10-day
silent
retreats.
These
retreats
are
open
to
people
of
all
religions
or
none
and
are
run
on
a
donation
basis.
The
retreat
begins
with
noble
silence,
which
means
no
speaking,
reading,
writing
or
eye
contact
is
allowed.
Participants
spend
most
of
the
time
sitting,
alternating
with
walking
meditation
in
an
uncluttered
environment.
The
most
challenging
part
is
observing
one's
breath
and
bodily
sensations,
which
can
be
painful
or
uncomfortable.
However,
awareness
of
these
sensations
allows
us
to
identify
the
root
causes
of
our
suffering,
which
are
inevitably
related
to
craving,
aversion,
and
ignorance.
The
retreat
builds
up
gradually
to
three
stages
of
meditation:
samadhi
(concentration),
vipassana
(insight),
and
metta
(loving-kindness).
The
techniques
are
interrelated,
and
each
stage
complements
the
other.
Vipassana
meditation
has
numerous
benefits,
from
reducing
anxiety
and
depression
to
improving
mental
clarity
and
equanimity.
It
also
enhances
our
sense
of
compassion,
empathy,
and
gratitude
for
life.
Vipassana
teaches
us
to
connect
with
ourselves,
